Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy, commonly known as EMDR, is a mental health therapy method. EMDR treats mental health conditions that happen because of memories from traumatic events in your past. It’s best known for its role in treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but its use also proven to treat a number of other mental health conditions.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a therapeutic approach designed to support your emotional healing. Through a gentle process of moving your eyes, or using other forms of bilateral stimulation, you’re able to safely and gradually work through the memories of trauma or distressing life experiences. The primary goal of EMDR is to help you heal and find peace from those painful memories. While it’s a relatively new therapy, first studied in 1989, numerous clinical trials over the years have shown it to be highly effective. Many people find that EMDR helps them heal more quickly than other therapeutic methods, offering hope and relief on their journey to recovery.
At Sarah Osborne Counseling, we understand that life can be really tough when you’re dealing with the effects of PTSD, complex trauma, addiction, or dissociative disorders. We’re here to support adults who are struggling with these challenges. We also specialize in working with first responders, offering a safe space to address the unique challenges they face in their line of work.
EMDR therapy helps you heal without having to relive the painful details of your trauma. Instead, it focuses on changing the emotions, thoughts, and behaviors that stem from those distressing experiences, allowing your brain to naturally heal. While the mind and brain are often used interchangeably, they’re different—your brain is an organ, while your mind is made up of your thoughts, memories, and beliefs. The way your mind works depends on how the brain’s networks communicate, especially in areas tied to memories and senses. That’s why certain sights, sounds, or smells can quickly bring back strong memories
